I know that everyone has been talking about the holidays and about all the cheer, and family and togetherness but many forget that there are people all over the world alone during the holidays, and with Christmas just a few days away, this has been on my mind. We all get caught up in our lives and what’s going on, but we forget about the man who lives next door whose wife died last year, and whose children live on the other side of the country. What is he doing Christmas Eve? Or Christmas Day? Do you think his holiday is full of joy and cheer? See that lady sitting at the diner counter tonight? Every night she comes to sit at the counter and chat with the waitress and the cook, but what will she do when the diner is closed because they are all home with their families? I try and go out of my way during the coldest, darkest months of the year to bring a bit of joy to those who struggle to find it every day. Whether it’s through a card, batch of cookies or an invite to dinner, I know that this tiny thing I do reminds these people that someone still wonders what is going on in their lives. No one has ever accepted Christmas dinner, but the smiles I have gotten with the cookies over the years keeps the joy in my heart even in the bleakest of times. I hope that this Christmas message strikes home and prompts you to say hello, Merry Christmas, or gets you to bake more cookies to be given to that older gentleman down the street who is missing his wife. Remember the greatest present you can give this year is the gift of true charity.
